General Graduation Information

All students must apply to graduate. Please contact the Graduation Office (231 Sparks Hall), call (404) 413-2248 or see the University Graduation Office web site for information regarding graduation procedures.

Graduation Checklist

The following information is to assist you in insuring that you have fulfilled all requirements necessary to graduate from the Georgia State University College of Law with the degree of Juris Doctor.

  1. You must complete a minimum of 90 semester hours to graduate.
    You may have a maximum of 11 hours of "S" (pass) credit.
    You must have 79 hours of graded credit.
    No, you may not pick which courses are pass/fail. Sorry.
  2. You must have passed all of the following required courses with a grade of 60 or better:
       
    Law 5000/5001 Civil Procedure I and II
    Law 5010/5011 Contracts I and II
    Law 5020 Criminal Law
    Law 5030 Legal Bibliography
    Law 5050/5051 Property I and II
    Law 5060/5061 Torts I and II
    Law 5070/5071 RWA I and II
    Law 6000 Constitutional Law
    Law 6010 Evidence
    Law 6020 Professional Responsibility
    Law 6030 Litigation
       
  3. The Upper Level Writing Requirement. (This is not RWA.) You must complete satisfactorily one substantial legal writing project during your upper class period of study.  To satisfy this requirement, the student must earn a grade of at least 73 on the written portion of any two- or three credit course that qualifies as a legal writing course. While there is no list of courses that meet the Writing Requirement, they are indicated on the course schedule each semester.  You may opt to do an Independent Research project for two course credits which may also satisfy the Writing Requirement.
  4. You must apply to graduate.  The deadline to apply is typically one year before the graduation date. Deadline dates are posted by the Graduation Office. Please visit the Graduation Office (231 Sparks Hall) or call (404) 413-2248 for more information. 
  5. When you apply to graduate, you must complete the application form, tand take it to the Graduation Office for approval. Then, take the stamped form and a check for $40.00 to Student Accounts (1st floor of Sparks Hall) to be processed.
  6. If you need to change your date of graduation, there is another form which must be completed and routed like the original request. If you file before the semester mid-point of the term in which you were supposed to graduate, you do not need to pay your graduation fee again.
